Choose the Right Infant Formula and Avoid Pitfalls! LNnT Is the Hidden Buff for Your Baby’s Immunity

Release time:2026-09-24 13:42Source:LONG HEALTH BIOTECHNumber of views:
Every mother knows that breast milk is the best food for her baby. But she may not know that, in addition to fat, protein, and lactose, breast milk also contains a low-key yet powerful “immune guardian”—human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). They are the third most abundant solid component in breast milk and are crucial to infants’ immune protection and intestinal health.

Today, we will focus on a “star member” of the HMO family—lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT). What makes it special? What does scientific research say? Which domestic company is leading the way? This article explains it all at once.

I. What Is LNnT? The “Natural Immunity Coach” in Breast Milk

LNnT, short for lacto-N-neotetraose, is a tetrasaccharide naturally present in breast milk and an important member of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). In breast milk, LNnT is one of the most abundant neutral core HMOs, and together with 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL), it is considered one of the two core categories in the HMO family.

In plain terms: if breast milk is a treasure house of nutrition, then LNnT is the golden key in that treasure house specifically responsible for “training a baby’s immune system” and “nourishing good gut bacteria.” It cannot be directly digested and absorbed by the baby, but it is precisely this “indigestible” property that allows it to travel all the way to the gut and precisely exert a prebiotic effect—selectively feeding beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria, thereby helping the baby build a healthy gut microecology.

What exactly can LNnT do for babies? Let scientific research speak below.

① Enhance immunity and reduce infections and medication use

A randomized multicenter clinical trial published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition (Puccio et al., 2017) added 2'-FL (1.0 g/L) and LNnT (0.5 g/L) to infant formula and observed healthy full-term infants for 12 months. The results showed that formula supplemented with LNnT and 2'-FL was safe and well tolerated, significantly reduced the incidence of lower respiratory tract infections, and reduced the use of antipyretics and antibiotics.

② Regulate gut microbiota, aligning with breastfeeding

Puccio et al.’s clinical study also found that formula supplemented with LNnT and 2'-FL significantly increased the population of Bifidobacterium in infants’ guts, making the gut microbial composition of formula-fed infants closer to that of breastfed infants. Notably, after consuming LNnT and 2'-FL, C-section infants’ gut microbiota also shifted in a healthier direction, narrowing the gap between them and vaginally delivered infants.

③ Promote intestinal epithelial cell growth and maturation

A 2025 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (Liao J, et al.) showed that LNnT can promote the proliferation and differentiation of intestinal stem cells in the colon and support intestinal development by altering the composition and function of gut microbiota. Simply put, LNnT not only feeds good bacteria but also directly helps the baby’s gut “build roads and bridges,” making nutrient absorption more efficient.

④ Produce butyrate—the “superfuel” for intestinal cells

A 2024 study published in Metabolites (Bajic D, et al.) found that among four HMOs, LNnT had the most significant enhancing effect on butyrate production. At a low dose of only 0.3–0.5 g/day, LNnT significantly increased short-chain fatty acid levels, and the effect appeared starting from a low dose. Butyrate is the most important energy source for intestinal epithelial cells and is crucial for maintaining intestinal barrier integrity.

⑤ Anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects

Studies have shown that LNnT can inhibit TNF-α-induced IL-8 secretion and has clear anti-inflammatory activity. At the same time, LNnT and its derivatives can regulate immune responses by increasing the numbers of Gr1+ cells and antigen-presenting cells and stimulate type 2 immune responses. In addition, LNnT has been shown to have the potential to promote wound healing.

Based on the ample scientific evidence above, LNnT has been allowed in China as a safe functional fortifier for infant formula and designated traditional foods and functional beverage products. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have also approved LNnT for use as a nutritional fortifier.

II. From Laboratory to Production Line: Zhuhai Langjian’s “Domestic Breakthrough”

Having understood the scientific value of LNnT, a practical question arises: can Chinese companies independently produce such a good ingredient?

For a long time, the strains, processes, and market pricing of human milk oligosaccharides were monopolized by overseas giants, and the domestic dairy industry was mired in a raw material “bottleneck” dilemma. But this situation is being rewritten by Zhuhai Langjian Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Zhuhai Langjian”).

China’s First Domestic Company Approved for LNnT

In October 2024, lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT) independently developed by Zhuhai Langjian was officially approved by the National Health Commission as a new food additive variety, marking that Langjian Biotechnology became the first domestic Chinese company approved for LNnT. LNnT is also the second human milk oligosaccharide, after 2'-FL, approved by the National Health Commission for addition to infant formula in China.

China-U.S. Dual Certification, Quality Benchmarked Against International Standards

In April 2026, Zhuhai Langjian’s independently developed and mass-produced three major human milk oligosaccharide ingredients—2'-FL, LNT, and LNnT—all obtained official U.S. FDA-GRAS certification after completing Self-GRAS safety certification, gaining access to the North American food ingredient market. This made it one of the few domestic HMO companies to achieve China-U.S. dual certification for 2'-FL and LNnT.

FDA official documents show that Langjian’s LNnT specification is a white to off-white powder with purity ≥92%, and both purity and quality are at industry-leading levels.

One of the Earliest Domestic Mass Producers, with a Proven Production Line

Langjian Biotechnology was among the first in China to achieve pilot scale-up of tetrasaccharides and neotetrasaccharides in HMOs and successfully completed multiple batches of stable industrial mass production. On the technology side, Langjian built an R&D platform integrating AI and synthetic biology, shortening the traditional strain R&D cycle by 70%, and overcame industry challenges such as ultra-long molecule synthesis and stable mass production of LNnT, achieving full independent controllability over HMO raw material technology, processes, and mass production.

III. Final Thoughts

From rigorous scientific papers to cans of formula that reach babies’ tables, the value of LNnT is being confirmed by more and more studies. Zhuhai Langjian Biotechnology uses four hardcore credentials—“first domestic approval + China-U.S. dual certification + ultra-high purity + large-scale mass production”—to prove one thing: domestic HMOs can not only be made, but can also reach internationally leading levels.

Breast milk is best, but when breast milk is insufficient or breastfeeding is not possible, choosing formula with scientifically validated ingredients is the best alternative for the baby. And today, this “best alternative” includes the power of Chinese smart manufacturing.
